Ingrown Nails
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. This condition most commonly affects the big toe.
Toenail surgery is recommended when conservative (non-surgical) treatments have failed or when symptoms are severe. Typical indications include:
- Recurrent or persistent ingrown toenails causing significant pain, swelling, or infection despite home care.
- Moderate to severe inflammation or infection, including granulation tissue formation when the nail is growing into surrounding skin.
- Chronic recurrence, where repeated episodes have occurred over months or years.
- Thickened or deformed nails causing ongoing discomfort.
Treatment Options
- Conservative nail care and management
- Partial nail avulsion with phenolisation
- Total nail avulsion
- Revision surgery for recurrent ingrown nails
