Diagnostic ultrasound

We use diagnostic ultrasound to assess and diagnose a wide range of foot, heel, and ankle conditions.

Diagnostic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses a specialised probe to create real-time images of the soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints of your foot and ankle. The probe emits sound waves that penetrate the tissues and are reflected to the device, which then converts these signals into detailed images. These images allow the surgical podiatrist to precisely identify the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

Unlike therapeutic ultrasound, which is used to promote healing and support softtissue recovery, diagnostic ultrasound is strictly a point-of-care assessment tool. It is particularly useful for guiding procedures such as corticosteroid injections, or minor interventions, ensuring accuracy, safety, and optimal outcomes.

In addition to its diagnostic role, ultrasound also serves a second important purpose in guiding injections. Receiving an injection is sometimes necessary to treat specific injuries or conditions, and delivering the medication directly to the exact location ensures it provides the best possible result. Using diagnostic ultrasound, the surgical podiatrist can see precisely where the injection is going, avoiding surrounding tissue and ensuring the medication reaches the area that requires treatment. This increases the effectiveness of the therapy and reduces the risk of complications.

While diagnostic ultrasound provides valuable, immediate information, there are limitations in imaging certain structures or deep tissues. In some cases, patients may be referred to a radiology service for additional imaging or confirmation using modalities such as MRI or CT to ensure a comprehensive assessment.

By incorporating diagnostic ultrasound into the clinic, we can provide immediate, evidence-based assessments and tailor treatments to each patient’s specificcondition, improving both the efficiency and effectiveness of care.
